Colour of the Year
Pantone Colour of the Year: Radiant Orchid in your home
For 2014 Pantone have advocated this rich, versatile shade of purple as their colour of the year.
Here we give you some tips on how to incorporate a touch of Radiant Orchid into your home; where you choose to focus your energies is up to you. Just remember, purple is a strong colour and often less is more!
The first question to ask yourself in any room is, ‘how much purple is too much purple’? To fully incorporate a strong colour theme into any room, it’s often best to opt for a neutral palette and then add key pieces to build it up.
Starting with the lounge, we would recommend creating a ‘feature wall’ first of all – where you can choose from a simple plain base, patterned wallpaper or a textured effect.
A less dramatic option which is applicable to most rooms would be purple-themed artwork like this delicate orchid canvas:
The above options are less applicable to your kitchen where, as a rule, most walls are covered by cupboards, appliances, tables/chairs or a door! But don’t be put off, in many ways your kitchen can be a very easy room to flood with colour; all you need is some glass-fronted display cupboards and the right choice of crockery.
Dunelm Mill offer a wide range of crockery sets, this purple spectrum set is perfect for an injection of purple orchid into your kitchen.
Fresh flowers on the windowsill serve as an added touch in this room so why not buy some real orchids and display them in a vintage vase?
Your bathroom also presents a great opportunity to add colour with so many choices –towels, rugs, tiling & accessories are all up for modifying. For some purple-themed luxury these Egyptian cotton towels from M & S are perfect. With some purple candles and other accessories dotted around, your bathroom can swiftly become a radiant orchid haven!
If you’re looking for larger scale additions, made.com has a huge range of vibrant soft furnishings on offer. Moving over to the bedroom you can use orchid purple as much or as little as you want; from bedcovers, lampshades & bedside tables to curtains, feature walls & wardrobes!
If you want to do something a little different in your bedroom this chair is a great way of cosying it up, particularly if you have a TV corner or a roomy bay window to fill.
