Underwater Interior Design Makeover, Wirral

Brief – To design and manage an Underwater Interior Design Theme on a young boy’s bedroom (Upton, Wirral)

Recently we were approached by the wonderful Make A Wish Foundation, who grant wishes for children with disabilities.  They tasked us with designing and completing an Underwater Interior Design Theme on a boy’s bedroom. The young boy is from a local family who live in Upton, Wirral.

To start with we met with his family to get some ideas for the bedroom; this gave us a chance to find out which items needed to stay in the room as well as working out any specific storage requirements.  The bedroom is a really important place for this child and so his family wanted to make sure the decoration provided suitable stimulation with bright colours & moving images, whilst also housing important equipment relating to his care.

The child is a huge fan of the characters from the Disney film “The Reef” & so the decorator Caroline got started painting the feature wall to include these weird & wonderful characters, alongside some more common place seaweed and starfish! We opted to paint the rest of the walls the same colour as the sand; a lovely light and fresh yellow chosen to brighten the room by emphasising the natural light provided by the window.

We found some storage ideas in IKEA that worked really well in keeping with the underwater theme; these items included a tall bedside unit, plus toy and DVD storage facilities and some drawers.  Bob, the handyman on this project, said these units were very solid once the flat pack elements had all been put together and these really added to the functionality of the room, whilst not detracting from the bright and interactive theme.

The projector image, with the projector itself positioned next to the bed, was pointed towards the feature wall right next to the bed. This enables the young boy to easily see the spotlight whilst lying in his bed.

To finish the room, we placed picture frames of the boy’s family on the main yellow wall, as well as hanging colourful lights along the top to attract the eye and provide another stimulatory element to the room. This also constitutes another source of bright light for when the exterior light fades.
